May was National Motorcycle Awareness Month. The initiative raises awareness for other drivers to be on alert, so you should contact an Ocala motorcycle accident attorney if you were hurt by another motorist’s negligence. The campaign also provides the opportunity to remind riders of some Do’s and Don’ts to avoid a crash.

DO Wear a Helmet: Florida doesn’t require riders over 21 years old to wear a helmet if they have at least $10,000 in medical insurance to cover their expenses in the event of an accident. However, statistics from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety show that proper headgear is 67 percent effective in preventing brain damage in a motorcycle accident. Though it’s a matter of personal preference, you reduce your risk of serious head injuries by putting on a helmet.

DON’T Forget Other Protective Gear: Besides head gear, consider other parts of your body that could be harmed in an accident. One of the most painful types of motorcycle crash injuries is road rash, which is a burn-like abrasion that occurs when exposed skin slides across pavement. It’s smart to invest in leather garments, jacket, gloves, and boots – or look into purchasing items made from a durable, high-tech textile.

DO Put the Phone Away: Texting, talking, or other cell phone use is just as dangerous when riding a motorcycle as when driving a car – even more so in a number of ways. Any activity that takes your eyes away from the roadway puts you at risk of a serious motorcycle collision. Your attention should be focused on steering, your speed, road conditions, weather, and many other factors. If using your phone is that important, pull over.

DON’T Split Lanes: Motorcycle riders are often tempted to ride in between lanes of traffic when cars are moving slowly or backed up. Though some other US states allow it, lane splitting is illegal in Florida because of the potential threat of accidents. Stay in your lane and obey all other traffic laws intended to protect your safety as a rider.

DO Recognize Visibility Issues: Other than wearing light, bright clothing, there’s little you can do to make yourself more visible to motorists. However, you can be sure that you remain vigilant and cautious at all times, knowing that drivers may not be able to see you. Erratic maneuvers, driving in a blind spot, and other risky practices put you at greater risk of an accident.
